Limit/Sort Page

Limiting is a way to narrow the results of a search. The first two limit options, Collection where item is located and Material format, are best used after a subject search before a specific subject is chosen or perhaps after an author search. This is because both are broad searches which are more likely to contain titles from a variety of collections and in a variety of formats where limiting may be useful. The other options may be useful anytime. More than one option may be used to limit the results of a search, although using the first two (Collection and Material) together would be either redundant or yield no results.

Collection where item is located - Clicking in the box that says "ANY" will pull up a menu that lists most collection locations in the library, such as adult nonfiction, juvenile picture books, or nonfiction video. To limit your search result to one collection, point with your mouse to the one you wish from the list, click or release when it is highlighted, and click

Material format - Clicking in the box that says "ANY" will pull up a menu that lists the formats of materials you may limit by, such as books, videos, music, or spoken word. To limit your search results to one format, point with your mouse to the one you wish from the list, click or release when it is highlighted, and click

Year of publication - Typing a full year date (ex: 1996) in either the "After" box or "Before" box or different dates in each box to make a range, and clicking will limit your search results to materials published before or after the date typed, or between two dates if you've filled in both.

Words in the (Title, Author, Subject) - Choose one of the three contexts by clicking in the "Words in the Title" box and making your choice. Then enter the word or words you would like to limit by in the second box. The catalog will perform a keyword search in the context you've specified, looking for those words in the records of your search results.

Sort - Clicking in the box that says "System Sorted" will drop down a menu that lists the various ways you may sort your search. You may choose from Newest First, Call Number, Author, Title or Oldest First. Point with your mouse to the one you wish from the list, then click or release when it is highlighted.
