Crazy 8's Math Club : Crazy 8s Race

Crazy 8's Math Club is for grades K-2 and a totally new kind of math club where you’ll build stuff, toss beach balls, make amazing mazes and more! You’ll have a blast with mischief-making activities like Beach Ball Party, Funny Money and Glow-in-the-Dark City. Crazy 8s Race: Play a brand new board game: roll dice to travel around a figure 8, and bring on your teammates when numbers match up. See who makes it to 8 x 8 first!

Preschool Storytime: Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your stuffed animals had a slumber party? What kind of silly things do they do when you’re not looking? Now is your chance to find out! Bring one of your stuffed animals to preschool storytime on Wednesday or Thursday, and leave them at the library for a stuffed animal sleepover! Come back the next day to find out what crazy antics your cuddly friend got into at the library overnight! Your stuffed animal will be safely returned to you with pictures of what they did! Pick up next day or whenever is convenient for you. A preschool-age oriented program for preschoolers where longer stories and books are shared with fewer activities. Preschool Storytime is recommended for children who are 3,4, or 5 years old.

Wonder Wednesdays : Full STEAM Ahead : Ice, Ice Baby! For Grades K-2

Wonder Wednesdays is a new after school series that incorporates learning STEAM in a fun way for kids in grades K-2 only. The second and third week of each month will be Full STEAM Ahead. We will be doing a variety of STEAM Activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Ice, Ice, Baby will be a fun afternoon of experimenting with ice! Due to limited space, this is a drop-off program. We kindly ask that siblings and caregivers wait outside the programming room, to give the kids space to move about.

Special Access Browsing

On selected days, the Library will open one hour early for individuals with autism and their families to enjoy the library together in a neutral environment. This month we welcome, Miss Jackie, to perform a special sensory storytime in the Storytime Room. The children's room will also have therapy dogs, sensory toys and activities. The library will also use Natural lighting throughout the library to accommodate those with light sensitivity.

Where does your food come from?

Join the Green Iowa AmeriCorps as they present a variety of local, regional, and exotic foods for you to learn about and try! Kids will learn where food come from and how it gets to them. There will be a craft and you can plant your own seeds to take home and grow this winter. This event is for grades K-3 and we ask that you please register.

Tween Book and Movie Club: The Watsons go to Birmingham

Which is better the book or the movie? Decide for yourself at our book and movie club just for tweens (kids in 3rd-6th grade). During this session we will read some of the book book and watch the entire movie version of "The Watsons go to Birmingham" by Christopher Paul Curtis. We'll watch the movie based on the book with an intermission for discussion and snacks. Try to read the whole book beforehand, it's available in multiple copies and formats from the library.

Fonziba Drums

Fonziba's African drumming enables people of all ages to discover and enliven their innate personal creativity. Join us for an afternoon of learning and music, and get hands-on experience playing one of the 30 jembe hand or bass drums that is brought to the library for this program. She also provides an interactive display of things used in a typical African home for cooking, eating, cleaning, washing, sitting and sleeping. This unique experiential approach gives everyone a rich and authentic taste of life in West Africa that broadens their understanding of other cultures and ways of living.

Learn Baby Massage

Join licensed massage therapist Kristin Bergman, LPN, LMT and Doula, of consciousbirthiowa.com from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. today and on February 24 in the Storytime Room to learn how to connect with your child through massage. Infant massage provides a special time of communication between parent and child. It also can improve a baby’s circulation, enhance neurological development, and help with congestion, gas, and colic. This class is intended for parents with infants ranging from birth to seven months. Parents should bring a towel or blanket, and food grade unscented baby massage oil or lotion. This program is free.

Wonder Wednesdays : Full STEAM Ahead : Balloon Rockets! For Grades K-2 only

First we make rockets, and then play with them…for science! As the air rushes out of the balloon, it creates energy with a forward motion called thrust. Different sizes and shapes of balloon will create more or less thrust. In a real rocket, thrust is created by the force of burning rocket fuel as it blasts from the rockets engine – as the engines blast down, the rocket goes up!
