Prenatal Yoga with Kelli from Zen Den Yoga

Expecting mothers are invited for a free prenatal yoga session at the library taught by Kelli Jackson, owner of Zen Den Yoga and an expecting mother herself. Yoga is beneficial during pregnancy because it helps you learn how to breathe deeply and consciously relax, which will be useful as you face the physical demands of labor, birth, and new motherhood. Yoga during pregnancy can keep you limber, tone your muscles, and improve your balance and circulation, so check out this class in the Storytime Room.

Arts Fest: ABC Saturday

On Saturday June 3rd, 10 am-3 pm, we are celebrating Art, Books and Children, or the ABC’s, during the Iowa Arts Festival! Mark your calendars now for this annual event, formerly known as Children’s Day, produced by the Iowa City Public Library with Summer of the Arts. World Wednesday: Ramadan Suncatchers

This year's Summer Reading Program theme is "Building a Better World." One way we can do this it to encourage cultural literacy. On Wednesdays, join us for an activity in the Storytime Room that will help us learn and understand something new about different world cultures. It is just beginning of Ramadan, an important time for Muslims (people who practice Islam). During Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, people fast, or refrain from eating and drinking, while it’s light out. For the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who observe Ramadan, the month is a time to focus on their faith and also perform generous acts. We will be making Masjid Sun Catchers to learn more about the Islamic culture.

World Wednesday: Guatemalan Worry Dolls

This year's Summer Reading Program theme is "Building a Better World." One way we can do this it to encourage cultural literacy. On Wednesdays, join us for an activity in the Storytime Room that will help us learn and understand something new about different world cultures. Worry Dolls are tiny, hand-crafted dolls from Guatemala.The indigenous people created Worry Dolls many generations ago as a remedy for worrying. According to the Mayan legend, when worrying keeps a person awake, he or she tells a worry to their worry doll, then place it under his or her pillow. The dolls take over the worrying for the person who then sleeps peacefully through the night. Come to the Storytime Room today to design and create your own worry doll with clothespins, thread, and markers.

SRP Kids: Jay & Leslie's Laughing Matters: Juggling, Mime, Magic & Other Nonsense

Pigs build houses, kids help design improvised stories, and Jay and Leslie engineer some cool juggling tricks. Fun at the library? Plan on it! Join us at 10:30 for the hilarious duo as they juggle, mime, show off a bit of magic, and make you giggle with their silly nonsense.

Listen to local storyteller Darrin Crow tell entertaining tales and bring stories to life! Darrin has been based out of Iowa since 1999 where he brings stories of Iowa history, folk tales, tall tales and more to life for audiences of all ages. He'll keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end today with his presentation of "Big Builders with Big Stories- American Tall Tales and Folk Tales."

Tween Minecraft Time

Do you play Minecraft and want to meet other Minecraft players? Come play at the library. Build peacefully in creative mode or fight to stay alive in survival mode. Game rotation and group play are encouraged. Players should have a Minecraft account to play in multiplayer mode. Players without an account may use a library account. This event is for children in grades 3rd-6th (ages 8-12) Please register below. If you need to change your registration, please contact the library.

Stories in the Park at Mercer: Dog Storytime with Clifford

HELD NEAR THE MERCER PARK AQUATIC CENTER. This week is "Take Your Dog to Work" week, so naturally the librarians are bringing Clifford the Big, Red Dog! Stories in the Park will feature stories, songs, and rhymes about dogs, and Clifford will make an appearance. This is your chance to bring your dog to storytime to enjoy the stories too! A preschool-age program where stories and picture books are combined with fingerplays, songs, and action rhymes. The ICPL bookmobile will be on site and open for checkout. Library cards can be issued or updated. Stories in the Park is recommended for children who are 3-6 years old.
