The following databases are available remotely only to residents of Iowa City and areas served by contracts of service: rural Johnson County and the cities of Hills and University Heights.

Magazine and Newspaper Indexes
ProQuest - Access thousands of articles from the Wall Street Journal and the New York TImes.
EbscoHost - Search numerous databases that cover a wide range of topics and which contain full-text articles, citations, and abstracts from sources such as newspapers, periodicals and newswires. Access to EBSCOhost is made possible through a partnership between the State Library of Iowa and Iowa's Area Education Agencies. Funding is provided by your local library and the State Library using federal Library Services and Technology Act dollars.
TopicSearch - Access information on a wide variety of topics, from sources such as magazines, newspapers, biographies and book reviews. Geared towards junior high and high school users.
Newsbank - Search the full-text of the Des Moines Register from 1999 to present, the Iowa City Press Citizen from January 2002 to present, The Iowa City Gazette and Cedar Rapids gazette from 1992 to present and a number of other full-text newspapers from across the nation.
Local News Index - Produced by the Iowa City Public Library, provides indexing for local information in newspapers and magazines. It currently goes back to 1970 and continues retrospectively.
NewspaperArchive - Local newspapers from across the country. Full text is searchable and the full page is displayed as a PDF file.

Historical Resources
Biography Resource Center - This database combines award-winning biographies from respected Gale Group sources. Biography Resource Center also includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search.
HeritageQuest - HeritageQuest is an online resource for census data, family records and local histories. It contains every extant U.S. federal census, banking and military records, genealogies, local histories, primary source materials, and genealogical and local history serials.
Local News Index - Produced by the Iowa City Public Library, provides indexing for local information in newspapers and magazines. It currently goes back to 1970 and continues retrospectively.

Chilton Library - ChiltonLibrary provides exclusive photographs, diagnostics designed by instructors, step-by-step repair procedures, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) maintenance schedules, wiring diagrams, recalls and Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for automobiles and light trucks in one easy-to-use web site.

Encyclopedias
Encyclopaedia Britannica - Search Encyclopaedia Britannica, Britannica Student Encyclopaedia, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and a World Atlas. Provides for searching by keyword, subject, and alphabetical listing.
Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia - Provides access to over 25,000 full-text entries, and is updated annually.

ArticleFirst - Offers searching and browsing of articles and journal table of contents in one database.

ClasePeriodica - An index of Latin American journals in the sciences and humanities.

ECO - Electronic Collection Online, provides a collection of scholarly journals in a variety of subject areas including education, medicine, psychology, science, and technology.

ERIC - A guide to published and unpublished sources on thousands of educational topics with information from REI (Resources in Education), and CIJE (Current Index to Journals in Education).

GPO Monthly Catalog - Consists of records published by the GPO since July 1976. Includes reference for documents to congressional committee reports and hearings, debates, documents from executive departments and more.

Medline - Covers all areas of medicine, dentistry, nursing, health services, administration, nutrition, and much more.

PapersFirst - Covers every congress, symposium, exposition, workshop, and meeting added to the British Library Document Supply Centre's vast proceedings collection since October 1993.

ProceedingsFirst - Provides tables of contents of papers presented at conferences worldwide. Each record contains a list of the papers presented at each conference.

World Almanacs - Includes the full text of all the Almanac titles: The World Almanac and Book of Facts , The World Almanac of the USA, the World Almanac of US Politics, The World Almanac for Kids and Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedia.

WorldCat - The world's most comprehensive bibliography, with more than 48 million bibliographic records representing over 400 languages on materials ranging from stone tablets to ebooks. WorldCat includes information from 2100 B.C.E. to the present with thousands of records containing evaluative content such as tables of contents, cover art, book summaries and notes about the authors.

Business Resources
Encyclopedia of Associations - a comprehensive source of detailed information on over 135,000 nonprofit membership organizations worldwide. It corresponds to the printed Encyclopedia of Associations family of publications as follows: National Organizations of the U.S., which covers more than 22,200 American associations of national scope; International Organizations, which covers some 22,300 multi-national, bi-national, and non-U.S. national associations; and Regional, State, and Local Organizations, which covers more than 115,000 U.S. associations with interstate, state, intrastate, city, or local scope or membership. The Encyclopedia of Associations database provides addresses and descriptions of professional societies, trade associations, labor unions, cultural and religious organizations, fan clubs, and other groups of all types.

Reference USA - Contains Business Database, which has information on 12 million U.S. businesses, and Residential Database, with information on 120 million U.S. households.

Ward's business directory of U.S. and private companies - a business directory emphasizing small to mid-sized private companies. Find information on individual companies or generate lists of companies, such as all companies within an industry in a specific state. Data includes sales, number of employees, chief officers and industry codes.

Contemporary Authors - Provides complete biographical and bibliographical information and references on more than 120,000 U.S. and international authors.
Contemporary Literary Criticism - Contemporary Literary Criticism--Select is an extensive collection of critical essays on contemporary authors. Each CLC--Select entry contains a biographical/critical introduction, listing of principal works and sources for further study.
NoveList - Find information on authors and books, browse lists of recommended reading and award-winning books, and find new books to read by describing plots that interest you.

Children's Resources
Grolier Online - The "New Book of Knowledge" encyclopedia, "Lands and Peoples" for information about the countries of the world, and "America the Beautiful" for information about the 50 states.
