Annual Events

bullet Mini Wind Turbine Program with UNI-CEEE Build and test a mini-wind turbine with UNI's Center for Energy and Environmental Education. For children in Grades 3-6. To ensure adequate supplies and space, registration begins April 20 and is limited to 50. To register, contact the Children’s Desk, 356-5200 or email child1@icpl.org Children do not get to keep the wind turbines, but the kits can be purchased directly from UNI-CEEE.

bullet Author Visits The Iowa City Public Library is dedicated to offering a variety of experiences with local and nationally-renowned authors to the public. Past authors have included Jan Brett, Jack Gantos and Linda Sue Park. Authors in 2010 include Sarah Prineas and John Coy.
bullet Kid's Chess Tournament Each fall the Library hosts a free chess tournament for Grades 3-6 (or younger if ranked with the United States Chess Federation). Cosponsored by the Hawkeye Chess Club.
bullet Paint a Ceramic Workshop On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, children in Grades 3-6 can paint a ceramic item with Fired Up. Registration required.
bullet Poetry Workshop for Grades 3-6 April is National Poetry Month. Do you write poetry? Do you enjoy listening to poetry and perhaps sharing poems together? Then this fun two-hour session held each year in early April is for you! Registration required.
bullet Popo's Puppet Festival A fun morning of puppet plays for children of all ages held each October.
bullet R.E.A.D. Series, Sundays From 2-4 p.m. on selected Sundays handlers and their "Reading Education Assistance Dogs" are available for children to read aloud to. Location: Storytime Room
