Loan Periods and Fines Fines are charged for all items returned to the building after closing on the due date and for each day thereafter that the Library is open. Fines are charged for all items returned to the Remote Book Drops after 1:00pm on the due date and for each day thereafter that the Library is open. There is no grace period.

Maximum Fine

The maximum fine for most materials is the fine times a maximum of 30 days, or $10, whichever is less.

Delinquency

Borrowing privileges are suspended whenever unpaid fines or other charges total $5.00 or more. Fines of $5.00 or more must be paid in full before borrowers may check out materials. You can pay your fines online 24-hours a day with a Visa or Master Card. Just login to your account, click on your fine balance, and then select the button labeled "Pay Online."

The tables below list the different library material categories, the limits (if any) on checkouts by category, the loan period for that material and the fine structure. 

Audiovisual equipment for checkout is circulated to patrons living in Iowa City and areas covered by contracts for service (Hills, University Heights, and rural Johnson County).

*Limit Definition: The number of items in a particular collection that may be checked out to one person. A borrower may not present multiple cards to increase the number of items he or she is allowed to take.
