Catch the Reading Bug: Summer Reading Program

Registration for the 2008 Summer Reading Program begins at Children's Day, June 8, on the Ped Mall. Weekly programs at 1 p.m. Wednesdays (Grades 4-6) and Thursdays (Preschool Play and K-Grades 6).

Storytimes

The Children's Room offers a set schedule of weekly storytimes throughout the year. Except on major holidays you can attend storytimes on:

Mondays & Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. (Toddler Storytime)
Wednesdays & Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. (Preschool Storytime)
Saturdays at 10:30 (Family Storytime)

There is no registration for library storytimes--everyone is welcome. These programs last approximately 30 minutes.

Book Babies Program

Book Babies is a six-week program offered approximately four times per year for babies 6-18 months old and their parents or caregivers. It is an active, participatory program intended to stimulate infant language development. We no longer require registration, but to help ensure the program's success, we do ask two things:

  • We ask that a lap is available for each infant.
  • We ask that you comply with the age restriction. The Book Babies program is ideal for infants, but may be less than interesting to toddlers or preschoolers. If you have an infant and an older child, feel free to bring them both. If your older child becomes restless, though, please be considerate of other participants.
  • More information is available by calling the Children's Room at 319.356.5200, option 6, or by emailing bookbabies@icpl.org.

    Special Events

The library offers School's Out Specials for children on days when public schools are not in session. Other special programming includes Popo's Puppeteer Festival, Young Puppeteers Festivals, Family Library Campout, Sunday Family Specials, and Children's Day, a part of the Iowa Arts Festival.

    Summer Reading Program

Each summer the library offers a reading incentive program for school-age children. Younger children may also participate by joining a read-along club.

    Outreach Services

Call 319.887.6029 to arrange storytimes and visits to preschools, daycares, and schools.
