Wireless Internet Access

ICPL provides 6 internal and 2 external wireless 802.11b/g access points. The wireless coverage areas overlap to provide wi-fi access to nearly all areas of both floors of the Library. The external antennas provide free Internet access to the Pedestrain Mall around the west and south sides of the Library.

What hardware do I need?

You will need a laptop computer with a WIFI network card. WIFI network cards can be purchased at any computer supply store.

What settings do I need?

Your laptop will need to be configured to obtain an IP address automatically using DHCP. Because each person's laptop is going to be different you will be responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. See the Configuring Your Computer for ICPL Access page for some helpful tips.

If you are a University of Iowa student with a laptop configured to access the University's wireless network using the AEGIS Client software, you may need to configure AEGIS to get it to work with ICPL's network. Please see the UI's Configuring AEGIS to Access an Open (Non-Encrypted) Wireless Network page for instructions. You may also find the AEGIS Client Installation information useful as well.

Where can I connect my laptop?

The following map gives guidelines for signal strength throughout the library. All areas of the library have WIFI access, but some areas closer to the broadcast points may be slightly stronger. The meeting rooms also have access to the wireless network.

Note: Two of the internal wi-fi points are in staff areas not shown on the maps below.
