Who is eligible to volunteer at the Iowa City Public Library?
Young Adults (grades 7 and up) and Adults participate in the Volunteer Program.
Students in grades 3-6 participate in the Youth Volunteer Program.
What kinds of volunteer jobs are available for Young Adults and Adults?
- Regular, ongoing jobs.
- Occasional jobs, for example, volunteering for a Library program or event.
- Short-term jobs, for example, working on a special project.
The Library's needs vary throughout the year, and there are not always openings available. Browse the City of Iowa City Volunteers Wanted for current openings. Library volunteer jobs might include:
- Checking in Library materials.
- Cleaning and inspecting the Library's videotape collection.
- Working at The BookEnd, the Friends Foundation's used bookstore.
What is the time commitment?
Regular, ongoing jobs require a three-month commitment and two hours per week. Occasional and short-term jobs vary according to the needs of the Library.

What is the Library's Youth Volunteer Program?
The Children's Room manages the Youth Volunteer Program for youth in grades 3-6. Youth volunteers work one hour per week under the supervision of Children's Room staff, completing a variety of tasks for the Children's Room. The Youth Volunteer Program runs during the school year with a short session during the summer. For more information contact the Youth Volunteer Assistant, at 319.887.6016.
