During the month of May, celebrate the life of local historian, Irving Weber, by becoming your own family historian. Learn how to get started with genealogy, dig into military records, or uncover your family history with classes provided by the Iowa City Public Library.
Have you ever wondered about your family history? Not sure how to start searching for your ancestors? Come join us for an introduction to Genealogy on Thursday, May 2, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Learn where to start your search and how to keep track of the information you find once you get started.
Do you have a family mystery or a gap in your family tree? One of the main ways of uncovering your family’s history is through the database Ancestry. Come to the library on Thursday, May 9, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and learn how to use our online genealogy resources like Ancestry.com to solve your biggest family tree questions.
Military records are great resources when trying to further your genealogy search. Join us at the library on Thursday, May 16, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. to learn the key information you need to know about using these military records.
Want to use the Digital Media Lab at any time while the library is open? Ask for an orientation at the Page Station so you can use the room’s technology to digitize your current photos, slides or VHS collections, edit digital images or video, or create new digital work. To use the lab, individuals should have a valid library card.
Classes are free and space is limited, so patrons should register early. To register for classes at the Library, visit https://www.icpl.org/events/digital-media-lab to register online. You can also register by calling the Library at 319-356-5200.
All classes are held in the Digital Media Lab on the Library’s second floor.
