March technology workshops for adults

We hope to see you for some tech and/or creativity in March!

Intro to Ravelry
Thursday 3/2, 6-7pm
Digital Media Lab

Have you ever wondered where to find knitting or crochet patterns? Or maybe you've heard about Ravelry but aren't sure where to begin?

Ravelry.com is one of the most popular websites to find patterns, track your projects and yarn stash, and connect with other fiber enthusiasts. We'll talk about the different sections of the website and cover some tips and tricks. Whether you're new to knitting/crocheting or you've been crafting for many years, Ravelry has something for you.

Arts & Crafts Supply Swap
Fri 3/3, 1-6pm: Drop off your extra art supplies (optional)
Sat 3/4, 10:30am – 12pm: Select new supplies!

Curious about a new craft but don't want to invest in a lot of supplies? Here's your chance to get some new-to-you craft supplies to try out.  List of donatable items.

Intro to the Cricut Cutting Machine
Sat 3/4, 11:30am – 12:30pm
Digital Media Lab

After you find something new at the Supply Swap, head upstairs to learn about our Cricut Maker 3 machine! Anyone interested in using the library’s Cricut Maker 3 to create paper cut-outs, vinyl stickers, iron-on designs, or other creations is invited to this introductory session.

Craft Night in the Lab
Mon 3/6, 6:30-8:00pm
Digital Media Lab

Bring your own portable craft project and make some progress in the company of other makers.  This month we’ll also have gold embossing supplies for paper projects on hand (as a special treat on Stacey’s birthday!) in addition to the regular shrinky dinks and buttons.

Computer Basics
Mon 3/13, 7-8pm

Do you know someone who asks you to do their computing for them?  Invite them to this session where we’ll take it slow and get more comfortable using a desktop computer, mouse, and keyboard.

Tour of the Digital Media Lab
Monday 3/20, 5:30-6:30pm

Drop by if you want to see what equipment and software is available for you in this part of the library!

Intro to Coding with Python, Part 2
Monday 3/20, 7-8pm

If you took Part 1 (or have those basic Python skills), apply what you learned to creating a simple quiz game. Along with practicing using the basics, you’ll learn some new skills! In this class, we’ll explain how to define functions, import libraries, read data from files, and accept user input.

Intermediate Photoshop
Mon 3/27, 7-8pm
Digital Media Lab

If you attended Photoshop for Beginners on February 20 or already have those skills, you're invited to Intermediate Photoshop!  We'll get into compositing, the process of combining multiple photos into one. To do so, we'll get comfortable with layers, selections, and masking.

We have two hangouts scheduled in March.  If you like either of these topics, let's gather around our shared interests!
Graphic Design Hangout  Tues 3/21, 5-7pm
Coding Hangout Wed 3/22, 5-7pm

And there’s one event on Zoom this month:

Read, Listen & Watch with Hoopla
Thursday 3/23, 10:30am
Zoom

Learn about Hoopla — a free digital service from ICPL that includes music, movies, television, eBooks, audiobooks, and comics.  Available to residents of Iowa City, Hills, Lone Tree, University Heights, and rural Johnson County.

Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions!  We are busy planning our summer offerings (already, if you can believe it!), and I’m excited about all the hands-on creativity that’s coming your way.
