Some of these are classic feel-good movies, some just make you cry, but all of these movies will make you feel something. If you want your heart strings to be plucked watch any of these movies and don't forget the tissues!

Big fish

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Big
Drama, Fantasy

William Bloom is a young man who never really knew his now dying father, Edward - outside of the tall tales his dad told him about growing up. During Edward's last days William and his wife Josephine hold a bedside vigil next to the old man as he recollects elaborate memories of his youth. Still doubting the legends and folklore, William makes a journey to meet a mysterious woman from whom Edward had bought property.

I've watched this movie more times than I can remember but it still gets to me every time. The stories are so engaging and entertaining to watch, and by the end they all come together in a truly touching finale.

The secret life of Walter Mitty

DVD MOVIE ACTION Secret
Drama, Fantasy

Watch the classic story by James Thurber, about a daydreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance, and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

Whenever I need a pick-me-up this movie is on the top of my list. I relate to the main character and how he zones out all the time, since I tend to do that too. It also helps that there are some great songs like Space Oddity they play; be sure to check out the sound track!

Crazy rich Asians

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Crazy
Drama, Comedy, Romance

A native New Yorker Rachel Chu accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young, to his best friend₂s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick₂s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country's wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors.

This movie is so much more than a comedy, it really hits you in the heart. I loved a lot of the scenery, especially at the big wedding and also when they went to get street food. A lot is packed into this movie and it all is worth the watch!

The big sick

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Big
Comedy, Romance

Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.

This movie is so real, probably because it’s based on the true story of the main actor meeting his wife. The relationship between Emily and her mom was so close to my own relationship with mine, I really related to the characters and felt what they were going through. Thanks to Kumail’s comedic talent this is definitely a feel-good movie.

For colored girls

DVD MOVIE DRAMA For
Drama

"A vibrant world where friends and strangers dream, fear, cry, love, and laugh out loud in an attempt to find their true selves. Adapted by writer/director Tyler Perry from Ntozake Shange's acclaimed choreopoem, this gripping film paints an unforgettable portrait of what it means to be a woman of color in the modern world"--Container.

When I say you need a box of tissues for this one, I really mean it this time. Anyone who may be affected by violent and sensitive topics may want to avoid this movie. There are so many important issues shown, and even though it is a decade old this year, these issues are still relevant today.

Up

jDVD FICTION Up
Animation, Comedy, Kids

Carl Fredericksen is a 78- year-old curmudgeon. He used to enjoy his modest life as a balloon seller when his adventure-loving wife Ellie was still alive. When she died, Carl was left with his memories and the awareness that they never made their dream journey to Paradise Falls in South America. When well-meaning officials consign Carl to Shady Oaks Retirement Home, he rigs thousands of helium balloons to his house and floats away. He discovers that Russell, a chubby Wilderness Explorer Scout has stowed away. In the tropical jungle, Carl and Russell find more than they bargained for. Charles Muntz is a crazed explorer whose newsreels once inspired Carl and Ellie; Kevin is an exotic bird with a weakness for chocolate; and Dug who is an endearingly golden retriever fitted with a voice box. More importantly, Carl and Russell discover they need each other.

Don’t be fooled; even though this is a kid’s movie you’ll still cry in the beginning. Or at least I did. My favorite character in this lighthearted story is Dug the dog, since he says a lot of things my dog probably wants to say.

The blind side

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Blind
Drama

Michael Oher is a homeless African-American teenager who is from a broken home. Mike is taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, Mike faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome - as both a football player and student. Mike works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle.

Since I’m not a football fan, some parts of this movie went over my head, but the telling of a feel good story transcends individual interests like sports. Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite actresses as well; this movie does not disappoint.

The pursuit of happyness

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Pursuit
Drama

In 1981, Chris Gardner was a struggling salesman. His wife worked double shifts to support the family including their young son, Christopher. In the face of this difficult life, Chris has the desperate inspiration to try for a stockbroker internship where one in twenty has a chance of a lucrative full time career. Even when his wife leaves him because of this choice, Chris clings to this dream. The odds become more daunting by the day. Together, father and son struggle through homelessness, jail time, tax seizure and the overall punishing despair in a quest that would make Gardner a respected millionaire.

This movie is so heartbreaking and real, I definitely have to have tissues around for this one. The happy ending part eventually comes, though; and it’s definitely worth it.

If Beale street could talk

DVD MOVIE DRAMA If
Drama, Romance

A timeless love story set in early 1970s Harlem involving newly engaged nineteen-year- old Tish and her fiance Fonny who have a beautiful future ahead. But their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Now the pair and their families must fight for justice in the name of love and the promise of the American dream.

This movie is another realistic one that puts you through many emotions, ranging from anger to happiness. The ending is definitely not a perfect “happily ever after” but the true love between the characters gives hope.

Big

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Big
Comedy

A 12-year-old boy's wish comes true when he asks a mechanical carnival genie to make him 'big'. He manages to land a job at a toy company where he experiences the complications of being an adult.

Another light one, but so many people recommended it to me during the process of creating this list that I had to watch it. Growing up is a complicated part of our lives and this movie reminds us to keep a little bit of our younger selves with us, always.

Hachi : a dog's tale

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Hachi
Drama

The heartwarming true story of a loyal dog named Hachiko. This very special friend would accompany his master to the train station everyday and return each afternoon to greet him after work. Even after his master passed away, he continued to return to the same spot at the station every day for the next nine years to wait for his beloved master. During his daily visits he touched many lives and taught the local people about love, compassion, and above all unyielding loyalty.

Someone recommended this to me, and though I haven’t watched it, I’ve heard a lot of good things. The story itself is touching so I’m sure the movie really brings it to life. I'm excited to watch it in the near future.

Stranger than fiction

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Stranger
Comedy, Drama

Kay Eiffel is an author writing her latest novel. Her story revolves about an isolated man named Harold Crick. What she doesn't know is that her fictionalized character is real. Harold is an IRS agent who has lived a dull existence. One day he begins to hear Karen's voice as she narrates what she is putting down on paper. Harold enlists the help of a literary professor to find out what is happening and ends up changing things about his life. He begins to have a relationship with his IRS client, a government-hating bakery owner named Ana Pascal. Harold, however, finds trouble when he hears that Karen plans to kill him.

Will Ferrell showcases a more subtle level of comedy than his other movies here, which really lets the emotional part of the movie shine. The author character is quirky but shows just how much we value others and their stories.

Hacksaw Ridge

DVD MOVIE ACTION Hacksaw
Action, Drama, Historical

During the bloodiest battle of WWII, in Okinawa, Desmond Doss saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he singlehandedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

While graphic, the determination shown in this movie is truly touching. Based on a true story, at the end they actually show the real life versions of some characters.

Fried green tomatoes

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Fried
Drama

A chance encounter in a nursing home leads to an unexpected friendship between a dowdy housewife and a spry octagenarian who tells her the story of a fiercely independent woman half a century ago, inspiring the housewife to change her life, often with hilarious results.

This was another highly recommended movie when I was asking around in preparation for this list. I'm glad I decided to watch it. When Evelyn took out that wall in her house, I really felt that.

Secondhand lions

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Secondhand
Drama, Comedy

To the rest of the world, Garth and Hub are mysterious old men hiding millions. But to Walter, they are family - and now they're about to lead him on an adventure he'll never forget.

When this movie was recommended to me, I thought the "lion" part was hypothetical. Turns out there's an actual lion that joins the adventures with the two (great) uncles and their nephew! I'm so glad I watched this fun, touching movie; it's surely earned a place on this list.
