The evil dead
by
DVD MOVIE SF/HORROR Evil
Teens in a secluded cabin in the woods are terrorized by evil demons from another world.
Practical magic
by
DVD MOVIE SF/HORROR Practical
The wry, comic romantic tale follows the Owens sisters as they struggle to use their hereditary gift for practical magic to overcome the obstacles in discovering true love.

This witchy classic used to scare me as a child, but overall it isn’t too terrifying. I do get a chill whenever I hear the lyrics “You are always on my mind…” -Jacy
The secret life of Walter Mitty
by
DVD MOVIE ACTION Secret
Watch the classic story by James Thurber, about a daydreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance, and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

Whenever I need a pick-me-up this movie is on the top of my list. I relate to the main character and how he zones out all the time, since I tend to do that too. It also helps that there are some great songs like Space Oddity they play; be sure to check out the sound track! -Jacy
Tinfoil butterfly
by Rachel Eve Moulton
FICTION Moulton Rachel
Fiction, Horror, Fantasy
Emma is hitchhiking across the United States, trying to outrun a violent, tragic past, when she meets Lowell, the hot-but-dumb driver she hopes will take her as far as the Badlands. But Lowell is not as harmless as he seems, and a vicious scuffle leaves Emma bloody and stranded in an abandoned town in the Black Hills with an out-of-gas van, a loaded gun, and a snowstorm on the way. The town is eerily quiet and Emma takes shelter in a diner, where she stumbles across Earl, a strange little boy in a tinfoil mask who steals her gun before begging her to help him get rid of "George." As she is pulled deeper into Earl's bizarre, menacing world, the horrors of Emma's past creep closer, and she realizes she can't run forever.

Recently I've been reading a lot of older books, but I wanted to try something new. While browsing the new shelf I found this interesting novel. The cover drew me in, and I'm excited to see if Emma can break away from her past. -Jacy
The power of sprinkles : a cake book by the founder of the Flour Shop
by Amirah Kassem
641.8653 /Kassem
Nonfiction, Cookbooks
Amirah Kassem preaches the power of sprinkles in her wildly creative first book. A modern-day Willy Wonka, Kassem reminds readers that joy can be found in creating something delightful and delicious, that baking a cake for someone is the best thing in the world, and that, when it comes to cake decorating, any mistake can be covered in sprinkles (and everyone will love it anyway!). With twenty-nine different cakes--from unicorn cakes and donut cakes to cakes that look like reindeer, popcorn, spaghetti, and avocado toast--and packed with photographs, illustrations, and infinite ideas, The Power of Sprinkles is a book for bakers and cake decorators at every age and level.

This has one of my favorite recipes for buttercream ever! I've made the cake featured on the cover and it went surprisingly well. This is a good option for home bakers, although the cake that you make in the first recipe is a little tall and harder to cut into typical cake sized slices. If you're looking for a show stopper for a birthday (or any kind of) party, this book is going to be your best friend. -Jacy
The regulators
by Richard Bachman
FICTION Bachman, Richard
Fiction, Horror
"There's a place in Wentworth, Ohio, where summer is in full swing. It's called Poplar Street. Up until now it's been a nice place to live. The idling red van around the corner is about to change all that. Let the battle against evil begin. Here come...The Regulators." (Goodreads summary)

This book is best read in partnership with Desperation by Stephen King. They aren't in a series together; they are separate stories that use the same pool of characters and the same evil entity. Recently I started to re-read this one; my favorite part that separates it from the other version is how King slows down time to really describe the gory details of the more intense scenes. -Jacy
Desperation
by Stephen King
FICTION King, Stephen
Fiction, Horror
"There's a place along Interstate 50 that some call the loneliest place on Earth. It's known as Desperation, Nevada. It's not a very nice place to live. It's an even worse place to die. Let the battle against evil begin. Welcome to ... Desperation." (Goodreads summary)

This book is best read in partnership with The Regulators by Richard Bachman (Stephen King). They aren't in a series together; they are separate stories that use the same pool of characters and the same evil entity. I haven't read this one in a few years, but I remember the setting vividly. It's in a remote town along the highway, where the evil Tak has essentially taken over, and some truly chilling things happen. -Jacy
My Lists

About Me
Where you'll find me: At the downstairs Help Desk, or else browsing the shelves for my next read/listen! If I'm not out at the Help Desk, I'm behind the scenes working on the Digital History Project.
Do you have pets? I have two cats. The older cat is named Stevie, and she is a Russian Blue with an attitude and a loud "meow." Her favorite hobby is knocking her water bowl into her food bowl and watching me clean it up. My kitten, Stella, loves chewing on my headphones when I forget to put them away (I've learned my lesson since). They both enjoy chasing each other down the hallway.
What are your hobbies? My hobbies include cooking, baking, and sewing. I like to cook healthy meals to eat throughout the week and to bake snickerdoodle cookies and cakes on the weekends. For sewing, I began quilting with my Oma and have started making clothes more recently.
What do you like to read? When I'm looking for a new book or audiobook, I could be in any of the different areas of the library since I have a lot of interests. I like to read YA fiction, since it reminds me of a lot of good reads from my childhood. Adult fiction is also high on my list, especially if it's by Stephen King. The nonfiction section isn't safe either; I've walked out with a stack of cooking or crafting books many times before. I'll try to read any book once, and have a few King books I've read too many times to count!
Calling a movie a “classic” in recommendations lists can be overdone, but in this case it really is true. Not only does this movie have two more after it, it’s been remade AND a series exists to continue the story. I put this one, the original movie, on the list but be sure to also check out Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, Ash vs. Evil Dead (the TV show), and the remake titled Evil Dead (instead of *The* Evil Dead like the original). -Jacy
