Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in an era when Black children were not allowed to go to the same schools as white children? Have you ever wondered what it was like to have parents who refused to accept that? Hear from someone who knows the answers firsthand in this exciting program!
2019 marks the 65th anniversary of the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education. In Brown, the US Supreme Court overturned the “separate but equal” justification for racial segregation in public facilities that had been in place since 1896. Schools, waiting rooms, buses, even water fountains were segregated. Facilities were supposed to be “equal” in order to satisfy the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment, but in practice they never were.
Dr. Cheryl Brown Henderson, daughter of named plaintiff Oliver Brown, will provide personal reflections on her family’s experience, the Brown case, and educational policy. Brown Henderson is the Founding President of The Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research, and owner of Brown & Associates, an educational consulting firm. She has an extensive background in education, business and civic leadership.
Join us to hear Dr. Brown Henderson and to help the Iowa City Department of Equity and Human Rights recognize local high school teachers with Inclusive Teaching Awards for expanding upon the legacy of Brown by truly recognizing the worth of every child in their classes. A reception with light refreshments will follow.
