Join us to discuss the All Iowa Kids Read book for 2021: Pie in the Sky by Remy Lai!

Pie in the Sky is an chapter book/graphic novel hybrid about two brothers, Jingwen and Yanghao. At the beginning of the book, Jingwen's family, who is Chinese, moves to Australia. He knows very little English and feels like an alien in his new home, but copes with loneliness and the loss of his father by secretly baking elaborate cakes with his brother.

We'll talk about the book and watch an exclusive author video Remy Lai recorded just for Iowa kids! Then, like the two brothers in the book creating elaborate cakes together, we'll get in the kitchen to make some sweets together, too: we'll make no-bake pinata cookies step-by-step!

The first 25 kids to sign up for this event will receive a free paperback copy of Pie in the Sky, which will be mailed to you a couple weeks before the event, so you have time to read it before the event. This book is also available for checkout in multiple formats from the library, and is "always available" as an e-audiobook on the Libby app (meaning it is always available to check out - no waiting in line for a hold ever! Ask library staff if you need help accessing the e-audiobook through Libby).

Whether you receive a free copy of the book or not, every participant will need to pick up a supply kit for this event anytime the library is open during the week leading up to this event. Your supply kit will contain everything needed for the no-bake pinata cookie activity.

This program is for children in grades 3-6.
