10/04/2021 6:00pm 10/04/2021 7:00pm Teen Hands-On Journalism Workshop Would you like to learn the powerful journalism tools of writing, researching, and storytelling? Would you love to gain the confidence to express yourself clearly? Then this program could be the perfect fit! Over the course of six weeks, you'll be introduced to reporting basics and get hands-on experience writing news, opinion, feature and sports articles. By the end, you will have the skills needed to report the news in your own community! Victoria Feng is a high school student, published journalist (with work recently in the New York Times!), and the founder of Launch Student News (launchstudentnews.org), a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting journalism. Her co-instructor and LSN's Director of Education Malini Pillai is Opinion Editor for her high school paper and placed 1st in her category at last year's IHSA Journalism State Final. This fall, they're offering a six-week journalism workshop for students in 6th-12th grade. If you love to write, are interested in joining the school newspaper, or just want to learn more about journalism, sign up for this program. No experience is necessary. This program will occur once a week for six weeks and participants are expected to be committed to attending all sessions. Once you register for the first session, you will be enrolled in the entire course. The dates are below: Monday September 13th 6 pm-7 pm Monday September 20th 6 pm-7 pm Monday September 27th 6 pm-7 pm Monday October 4th 6 pm- 7 pm Monday October 11th 6 pm- 7 pm Monday October 18th 6 pm-7 pm This program will occur over Zoom and will have the option for Teens to meet in the Teen Space at the Iowa City Public Library to watch and learn together, or you are welcome to sign on from home. Registration is needed for those participants who are taking part at home, but not necessary for those taking part at ICPL.
