Employment Openings

The library has a variety of jobs ranging from entry level shelvers to professional librarians and Managers of Departments. When openings are available, they are posted in the list below.

  • There are no positions at this time.

How To Apply

Fiction Page Station

Applicants may report to the Business Office of the public library Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to pick up an application for employment. Many of these positions require a test and they are given at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Business Office. After the deadline for submitting applications, the hiring supervisor will review the applications, test scores and phone candidates for interviews.

Higher level permanent positions, with benefits, become available less frequently and may have a slightly different application and posting procedure.

Types of Jobs

The most frequently advertised jobs are in the entry level positions such as Circulation and Information pages. These positions are hourly paid and have no benefits. Employees hired to fill these positions work under 20 hours per week and fulfill a variety of tasks such as sorting and shelving books in the Circulation Department and assisting patrons with reference materials in the Information Department.

Openings such as these are advertised in several ways: Job postings are mailed to various employment offices in the community. They are posted on the Internet, on the University's Jobnet, and at the City of Iowa City Human Resources Department as well as here at the Library. Often, we simultaneously place an ad in the local newspaper.
