Valentine's Day Movies

Not sure what to do this Valentine's Day? Make a date with one of these romantic movies!

The notebook

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Notebook
Drama, Romance

Allie and Noah meet as teenagers, and fall in love, but they are separated by Allie's parents, who are concerned by their different social classes. When Allie and Noah meet again after several years, their passion is rekindled, and Allie must choose between true love and the match her parents approve of. This story has particular meaning to an older gentleman who regulary reads the love story to his aging companion.

Of course this classic romance would make its way into my Valentine’s movie list. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend seeing what the fuss is about; if you already have, then this is a good time to rewatch!

Baby driver

DVD MOVIE ACTION Baby
Action, Drama

A talented, young getaway driver relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss, he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

A movie about a driver for heists may not seem like a romance, but love shows it’s pull in many ways. The main character’s love for his foster dad, for a girl he meets, and another character’s love for a fellow heist conspirator are all driving forces in this story. By the end of the movie, we all want to know how Baby’s love story plays out.

Slumdog millionaire

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Slumdog
Drama

Jamal Malik is an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' When the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up. He describes their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Every chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible questions. When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers watch to find out if he can answer the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.

This movie is touching in many ways, with the love story as just one part of it. The way the main character is motivated by his love, though, definitely qualifies this as a romance.

Titanic

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Titanic
Drama, Romance

Deep-sea explorer Brock Lovett has reached the most famous shipwreck of all, the passenger liner Titanic. Emerging with a safe believed to contain a diamond called "The Heart of the Ocean," he finds that the safe does not hold the diamond but a drawing of a beautiful woman wearing it. When Brock is interviewed on TV, he shows the drawing to the cameras. A 100-year-old woman named Rose Calvert recognizes the woman in the drawing as herself! On a visit to Brock's exploration ship over the wreck, Rose tells her story of the Titanic and its ill-fated voyage. Engaged to the very rich Cal Hockley, she boards the Titanic's first-class suites with him and her mother in Southampton. Winning a lucky poker game, Jack Dawson and his friend Fabrizio, board Titanic in steerage. When Rose attempts to jump off the stern in third class, Jack pulls her back onto the ship. The two instantly bond and Jack is invited to dine in first class the next evening. Rose's mother and Cal try desperately to keep them apart. But on that fateful night, the Titanic collides with an iceberg and begins to sink. Now Rose and Jack must fight to stay alive.

No mater which side of the “enough room on the floating door” argument you’re on, Titanic is still a great movie. The love scenes are iconic, from the sketch to the dramatic posing on the ship’s bow, and make this movie perfect for a Valentine’s Day binge.

If Beale street could talk

DVD MOVIE DRAMA If
Drama, Romance

A timeless love story set in early 1970s Harlem involving newly engaged nineteen-year- old Tish and her fiance Fonny who have a beautiful future ahead. But their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Now the pair and their families must fight for justice in the name of love and the promise of the American dream.

This movie is another realistic one that puts you through many emotions, ranging from anger to happiness. The ending is definitely not a perfect “happily ever after” but the true love between the characters gives hope.

The summer of 1963 innocent 17-year-old Baby vacations with her parents at a Catskill's resort. One evening she is drawn to the staff quarters by stirring music. There she meets Johnny, the hotel dance instructor, who is as experienced as Baby is naive. Baby soon becomes Johnny's pupil in dance and love.

If you aren’t sure where the phrase “no one puts Baby in the corner” came from, here it is. This classic movie is worth the watch, the magical lift scene alone makes it an amazing movie.

Your name

DVD MOVIE FOREIGN JAPANESE Your
Drama, Fantasy, Romance

Mitsuha and Taki are two total strangers living completely different lives. She dreams she is a boy living in Tokyo while Taki dreams he is a girl from a rural town he's never been to. What does their newfound connection mean? And how will it bring them together?

Don’t underestimate this movie because it’s animated, the love story is just as touching as any other movie on this list. In fact, out of all of the other love stories, these characters become the closest! You’ll have to watch it to see what I mean.

The big sick

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Big
Comedy, Romance

Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.

This movie is so real, probably because it’s based on the true story of the main actor meeting his wife. The relationship between Emily and her mom was so close to my own relationship with mine, I really related to the characters and felt what they were going through. Thanks to Kumail’s comedic talent this is definitely a feel-good movie.

27 dresses

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Twenty
Comedy, Romance

Jane has the kind of selflessness that everyone looks for in a friend. Lately the perennial bridesmaid has begun to feel as if something is missing in her life. Kevin is a local newspaper reporter who spots Jane racing between two receptions - one in Manhattan and the other in Brooklyn. He quickly surmises that her quirky tale may be just the story to get him into the big leagues. Jane butts heads with Kevin just as her younger sister, Tess, shows up in town. Now, Jane is prompted to reevaluate her priorities when her boss - with whom she is secretly in love - falls for her younger sister. As the bride-to-be makes plans to marry, she mistakenly assumes Jane will be happy to take part in the wedding. Jane finally comes to terms with her true feelings and her life begins to change in ways she never expected.

While I haven’t watched this one in a long while, I still remember all of the crazy bridesmaid dresses! If you want something more comedic than romantic, this is a good choice.

The proposal

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Proposal
Romance, Comedy

High-powered book editor Maggie is everyone's worst nightmare: ruthless, driven, and tactless. When she finds herself faced with deportation back to Canada, she coerces her much younger assistant into marrying her. However, when the government becomes suspicious, they embark upon a charade in order to make the marriage seem legitimate.

I’ve watched this about a million times, and it still makes me laugh. With great actors like Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, this movie is perfect for those who like a little comedy in their romance.

How to lose a guy in 10 days

Andi is the "How to" girl at an up-and-coming women's magazine who needs to prove she can pick up any guy and dump him in 10 days. And in order for Ben to win an advertising presentation he needs to prove he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days. Now that they are a "couple" and the clock is ticking, anything goes ...

Betting on relationships never seems to end well but that doesn’t stop these two from trying. I saw this for the first time this week, and thoroughly enjoyed the numerous sabotage attempts that were employed.

Princess bride

DVD MOVIE SF/HORROR Princess
Romance, Drama, Fantasy

A kindly grandfather sits down with his grandson and reads him a bedtime story. As the grandfather reads the story, the action comes alive in a classic tale of love and adventure. The beautiful Buttercup is kidnapped and held against her will in order to marry the nasty Prince Humperdinck, while Westley (her childhood beau, now returned as the Dread Pirate Roberts) attempts to save her. Along the way he meets an accomplished swordsman and a giant, both of whom become his companions in his quest.

"As you wish" will always be a romantic phrase, no matter how many times it's used to reference this movie. If you haven't seen this movie yet I can't say how much you need to watch it. A timeless classic!

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Affair
Drama, Romance

Although each is engaged to someone else, when Nickie and Terry meet aboard an ocean liner, they fall in love. After they agree to rendezvous six months later atop the Empire State Building, tragedy strikes, and the lovers' future takes an uncertain turn.

While I haven't watched this movie in full, it would be perfect for anyone who loves classic films and dramatic romance. A perfect one to set up on a projector and pretend you're at a drive in theater.

Drama, Romance

A young boy in a small Italian village is befriended by the projectionist at the movie theater, the Cinema Paradiso. As the boy grows up, he learns to love films, and is encouraged by his good friend to pursue his dream of one day making movies.

A critic's review of this movie simply said "A treat," and I agree. This movie is in Italian but the story still shines through, with help from the subtitles.

Southside with you

DVD MOVIE DRAMA Southside
Romance

Chronicles the summer afternoon in 1989 when the future President of the United States, Barack Obama, wooed the future First Lady, Michelle Robinson, on an epic first date across Chicago's South Side.

When I heard that there was a modern romance based on one of our very own Presidents, I had to add this to the list. Romances based on real, lived experiences are especially touching, in my opinion.

Lost in translation

DVD MOVIE COMEDY Lost
Comedy, Romance

A middle-aged actor and the wife of a photographer meet while on business in Tokyo. They strike up an unusual friendship in the hotel bar that helps them both overcome boredom and loneliness.

This movie came highly recommended to me and I don't doubt that it's a good watch, especially with Bill Murray as the lead man.
