The Rochester Township cemetery dates back to the 1830’s, and contains the graves of some of the earliest settlers in the area. It is also one of the few remaining original prairie remnants in the state of Iowa.
It is still a working cemetery – any resident of Rochester Township can be buried there for free. Cared for today by the small group of Rochester’s Township trustees, Rochester Cemetery is a site to behold, for its historic significance and the early graves or for the more than 350 native prairie plant species and wildlife that call it home.
Bring your camera, sunscreen and bug spray and join us for a guided hike through Rochester Cemetery. We will meet at the north gate of the cemetery at 1180 Cemetery Road, Tipton. GPS coordinates: 41.665667, -91.139558
