06/08/2021 7:00pm 06/08/2021 8:00pm Let's Talk Books: Own Voices The term Own Voices (or the hashtag #OwnVoices) describes fiction written by authors who are members of a marginalized group who use their own personal experiences or perspectives to create a main character who is a member of the same marginalized or under-represented group as the author. "Even when portrayals of diverse characters by majority-group authors are respectfully and accurately done, there’s an extra degree of nuance and authority that comes with writing from lived experience. Those books that are #OwnVoices have an added richness to them precisely because the author shares an identity with the character. The author has the deepest possible understanding of the intricacies, the joys, the difficulties, the pride, the frustration, and every other possible facet of that particular life — because the author has actually lived it." - Omaha Public Library Not quite a book group, Let's Talk Books is a series of casual conversations about books where we meet to share descriptions of our favorite reads. Join us for your favorite genres to chat with like-minded readers. Bring a couple of recommendations to share or just show up to hear what everyone else loves! Register here to reserve your spot for the discussion. Our video chat gathering will take place in Zoom, and you’ll receive an email with login details in advance. Everyone is welcome.
