Library EventWorld Wednesday: Chinese Shadow Puppetry

On Wednesdays during our Summer Reading Program, elementary-age kids are invited to join us for a different event every week to understand and experience cultures around the world!

Chinese shadow puppetry is a form of theatre acted by colorful silhouette figures made from leather or paper, accompanied by music and singing. Manipulated by puppeteers using rods, the figures create the illusion of moving images on a translucent cloth screen illuminated from behind.

Join us today to explore the amazing traditional PI Ying (shadow puppetry) craft! First, we will enjoy mini shadow puppet shows performed by local elementary students, which includes some fun excerpts from classical Chinese fairy tales and folklores. Next you can choose your favorite template and create your own shadow puppet figures. And then team up with your siblings and friends, or even with some new friends in the library, and present your own shadow puppet stories on our illuminated puppet stage! Get inspired by your favorite characters, or spark your imagination and bring us your own stories, and let’s put on a show!

中国皮影戏是用皮革或纸张经过刀雕和彩绘制成人物剪影，结合戏曲，音乐进行表演的戏剧形式。皮影艺人用长杆控制皮影人偶，让观众可以通过白色布幕观看人偶表演的灯影。
今天的活动和我们一起来探索传统的皮影工艺！首先我们将欣赏由几位小学生朋友带来的经典皮影短剧，之后请选择你喜欢的人物模板尝试自己制作皮影人偶，制作完成后可以和你的兄弟姐妹或好朋友一起组队来到我们的灯影小舞台表演你自己的皮影戏。无论是你喜欢的经典人物， 或者是现场发挥自己创作的皮影故事，和我们一起来玩皮影戏吧！

El teatro de sombras chinas es una forma de teatro interpretado por figuras de siluetas coloridas hechas de cuero o papel, acompañadas de música y canto. Manipuladas por titiriteros con varillas, las figuras crean la ilusión de imágenes en movimiento en una pantalla de tela translúcida iluminada desde atrás.
