The Iowa City Public Library invites children interested in the performing arts to visit ICPL Sunday afternoons for October Improv!
Using a variety of drama techniques to bring popular children’s stories to life, October Improv! will explore the many ways there are to tell stories, and how actors can experience the character, action, and themes inside of stories. These weekly drama sessions will be led by AmyRuth McGraw and students from the University of Iowa’s Drama in the Classroom course as part of Sunday Fun Day.
Sunday, October 2: Caps for Sale
Designed for students in grades kindergarten through second, children are invited to take on the role of monkeys and experience this well-loved story in a new way. They’ll also learn to build a story with their bodies, voices, and an empty room.
Sunday, October 9: The Legend of the Shooting Star
Participants will explore how storytelling devices prepare them for drama work, music inspires movement, and playing broadens the creative mind. This program is designed for children in third through sixth grade.
Sunday, October 16: Where the Wild Things Are
Sail off with Max to the land of the Wild Things. Don’t forget your imagination and terrible roar! Designed for children in grades kindergarten through second.
Sunday, October 23: The Legend of the Dancing Teakettle
Participants will explore the countryside of Japan in a lesson of how actors use space. This program is designed for children in third through sixth grade.
Sunday, October 30: Crafts with Casper
We resume our regular Sunday Fun Day programming with an arts-and-crafts activity geared towards families with children of all ages. Stop by to make some spooky ghost crafts while we watch the Halloween classic, Casper the Friendly Ghost.
All programs are held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Storytime Room. Preregistration is required for October Improv!, either by going to the ICPL calendar (calendar.icpl.org) and registering on the event date, or by calling the Library at 319-356-5200.
