The Iowa City Public Library will celebrate Teen Read Week (October 13 through October 19) with two special events.
Short and Sweet
ICPL Teens will host a Two-Sentence Story Contest. Beginning October 13, writers in grades 7 through 12 are invited to submit their best two-sentence story in any genre. Submissions will be judged by the Teen Activity Group. The winning author will receive a Prairie Lights gift certificate and be featured on the ICPL Teen blog (http://teens.icpl.org/) and Tumblr (http://icpl-teens.tumblr.com/).
Send submissions to teens@icpl.org or post it on Tumblr under #ICPL TEENS 2SENTSTORY between October 13 and October 19.
Eat Your Words
Students in grades 7 through 12 are invited to bring in their homemade submissions to ICPL Teen’s Edible Book Contest on October 17. Bake a cake that looks like “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” or make a giant Rice Krispies Treat that resembles “The Fault in Our Stars.” It doesn’t matter what you do; it just needs to look like a book and be edible!
Entries may be created individually or in groups.
All participants will be invited to vote on their favorite submissions prior to consumption. Judging begins at 7 p.m. and will conclude at 8 p.m. Entries can be brought to the Library’s second floor as early as 3 p.m. The judging will take place concurrently with an edible book-making event where teens can make their own wee edible book at the Library! The winner(s) of the contest will be awarded ICPL “Eat Books, Read Food” bags and be featured on the ICPL Teen Blog (http://teens.icpl.org/) and Tumblr (http://icpl-teens.tumblr.com/).
About Teen Read Week
Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association. Aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults, the continuing message of the Teen Read Week initiative is to encourage 12- to 18-year-olds to “Read for the Fun of It.” Teen Read Week began in Launched in 1998 and is celebrated annually during the third full week in October.
