Press ReleaseSchool’s Out Special: Snowed In at ICPL

The Iowa City Public Library will celebrate the No School Day on Thursday, Feb. 27, with a Snowed in at ICPL event.

School-age children are invited to come to the Library from 2 to 3 p.m. Feb. 27 in Meeting Rom A for several winter-themed activities, including an indoor snowball fight and ice skating. igloo

“We thought having typically snow-based activities inside the library would be really fun,” says Casey Lambert, Library Assistant III. “I mean really, who ice skates inside?”

Children also will be asked to help construct an igloo out of empty gallon milk jugs that will remain in the Children’s Room as a unique reading space. Nearly 200 gallon milk jugs will be used for this activity.

“The main purpose of this event is to gets kids out of the house on parent teacher conference day, have them do something fun and different that involves winter but really celebrates the end of snow by using other household items in simulation instead,” Lambert says. “It’s also a really nice way to give kids the space to let off some of that winter and back-to-school steam before spring break.”

Given this year’s frigid temperatures, Lambert says cabin fever levels are high, so she hopes the area’s school-age children will take advantage of an afternoon activity that celebrates winter and creativity, and allows them to see a different side of the Library.

“Our younger audience has the opportunity for library events every week with storytimes and special guests, but those kids in school can be overlooked in our rush to draw early readers and lifelong patrons,” Lambert says. “That’s why I scheduled the event for the afternoon, in hopes that we could get some of the older elementary students to participate.”

Snowed in at ICPL is a free event for students who attend elementary school. Pre-registration isn’t required.
