DNA Interest Group: Predicting your traits

Recorded September 25, 2018

In the past decade there has been an explosion of studies surveying genetic risk for thousands of traits and diseases. These studies allow users of direct-to-consumer genetic tests to predict their traits and disease susceptibility based on the combined impact of numerous genetic variants. Some of these estimates are available directly from genetic testing companies, such as predictions of height and weight. In this session we will cover how these predictions are formed, discuss current and future medical implications, and review websites which make these predictions widely available to users of direct-to-consumer genetic tests. The DNA Interest Group is designed to bring together individuals in the Iowa City area interested in learning about the use and interpretation of commercial DNA test results. Meetings will address a variety of different topical areas, including applications in genealogy, inferences of traits, exploration of human genetic variation, and the societal impact of these services. Meetings will also include group discussions, and are free and open to the public. If this topic interests you, join us!
