Go for the Gold with wrestling events at ICPL


DanGableReads Iowa City hosts the United States Olympic Wrestling Trials at Carver Hawkeye Arena on April 21 and 22 and the Iowa City Public Library will welcome locals and visitors alike with wrestling exhibits and programs.

Iowa Olympic Gold Medalist Dan Gable with be the featured speaker at a program on Friday, April 20 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Gable will sign autographs after the program. The Library will also feature exhibits throughout the month of April with treasured books and memorabilia from Gable's personal collection as well as posters and other items from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.

gable1 Attending the Olympic Wrestling Trials? Do you know the difference between collegiate and Olympic wrestling or want to learn more?

Iowa City wrestling legends Tom Lepic (University of Iowa Wrestling 1971-1975, and former Iowa City West wrestling coach) and Jeff McGinness (University of Iowa Wrestling 1994-1998, two-time NCAA wrestling champion, three-time All-American, undefeated Iowa City High wrester 172-0) will explain how Olympic wrestling is judged and share stories of their time on the mat and how wrestling has shaped their personal life.

DanGableReads The Library will also show "Freestyle, the Victories of Dan Gable," the 1998 documentary about the wrestling great and Ellen Buchanan's 1992 interview with Dan Gable from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 in Meeting Room A.

DISPLAYS

Through the month of April, The Library will show displays featuring items from Dan Gable's collection including his favorite books! Also items from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, the Dan Gable BookMark statue, and other wrestling memorabilia in the Atrium, and Ellen Buchanan Children's Room.
