2022 Women’s History Month - Girls Adopted from China

by Fang

In 2015, China announced that every family would be allowed to have 2 children, which officially terminated its 35 years of one-child policy starting from 1980. Behind this small piece of history, millions of baby girls were induced abortion, abandoned or killed due to the policy and the peoples’ preference to have male children, particularly in rural areas. From 1999 to 2018, an estimated 110,000 children were adopted globally from Chinese orphanages, mostly girls. More than 80,000 of them came home all the way from overseas to America. Some already got married and had their own babies. Some won the Olympics. Have you ever seen their cheers and tears? Do you want to share their stories and dreams? Here is a list of some wonderfully inviting picture books about these girls’ adventures!

One of the consequences from the one-child policy is that China’s overall sex ratio became notably skewed toward males, leaving a large group of single men desiring partners for marriage. The situation exacerbated the long lasting and extensive human trafficking crimes in the country, resulting in a major threat to the safety of women and children. Numerous women were kidnapped, traded and tortured to death or mental illness. Their families were left desperate and broken hearted. One of the sad stories was told by Yang Li in his 2014 movie: Blind Mountain, in which the tragic heroine was drugged and sold as the "bride" of a rural brute after graduating from college.

Once again, we're celebrating the Women’s History Month in March. However, in Xuzhou, and some other parts of China, there are still women who are chained or caged as sex slaves and fertility machines. See press release:

We pray for the wellbeing and freedom of every single victim who is in burning need of attention and rescue. We call for the sun of righteousness to shine down on every sinful corner of the world.
