04/16/2019 7:00pm 04/16/2019 8:00pm Poetry Month Event: Readings by poet Wendy Labinger and dance with Travelers Dance Wendy Labinger is a 2016 PEN Center USA Emerging Voices fellow. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Iowa and her master’s degree in deaf education from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. She has taught English as a second language for twenty years. Wendy's poems have been published in Sheila-Na-Gig, The Brillantina Project:Poetry for Orlando and most recently in Only Light Can Do That, an anthology of post-election writing. She recently returned to Iowa City from Los Angeles and is working on her first collection of poetry. Angela Hayes is an independent choreographer and performer in Iowa City. ( While pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in education she studied dance and composition at the University of Iowa performing in numerous concerts, and presenting her own choreography. She also performed with I-Works, where she studied with Doug Wood, who introduced her to the process of collaboration.) In 1998 she co-founded Travelers Dance with three goals: 1. provide opportunities for adult dancers in the area 2.expand audiences for dance by collaborating with artists in other disciplines. 3. Bring dance to these audiences in non traditional spaces. Past collaborations have included: sculptor Gene Anderson; poets Marvin Bell, Beth Roberts, Wendy Labinger; photographer Sandy Dyas; musicians Dave Moore, Bo Ramsey, and Red Cedar Chamber Music; composer Jerry Owen. Her work has been performed throughout the state, in San Francisco, and locally at traditional venues:The Englert, University Theatres, Coralville Center for the Performing Arts, CSPS. Prior to her work on this project, her most recent collaboration was with the international writers workshop participant, Usman Ali, a Pakistani playwright. Travelers continues to bring dance to audiences in nontraditional spaces: from museums and galleries to hotel lobbies and coffee shops.
