05/18/2019 3:00pm 05/18/2019 8:00pm ICPL 2nd Annual Genealogy Lock In Have you caught the genealogy bug? Join us for ICPL’s 2nd Annual Genealogy Day in the Digital Media Lab. During the afternoon, guest speaker Theresa Liewer from the State Genealogical Society will discuss naturalization records – what they are and how to find them. ICPL Librarians will then give you a quick introduction to some of the genealogy sources and databases available to you here in the Library. After the library closes, you can stay and use the library’s print and online resources. Library staff will be on hand to help where we can. 3:00pm At some point almost everyone researching their family tree will come to a point where they are trying to figure out when, where and how their ancestor came to the United States and how they became citizens. Iowa Genealogical Society instructor and past president Theresa Liewer will walk us through the history of the naturalization laws and process, to help us understand what records exist and what they contain. We'll also learn where to find the records and why some of our ancestors never seem to appear in them. Theresa will also cover passenger lists - their history and contents and where to find them. 4:30 A quick introduction to Genealogy Resources at ICPL. 4:45-5:45pm Dinner Break If you're going to stay after hours to work on your genealogy, you must be back in the Digital Media Lab before the Library closes at 6:00 pm. 6-8:00 pm Individual Work Time. You'll have access to all the Genealogy resources available here at the library, including print and databases.
