09/23/2021 4:00pm 09/23/2021 5:00pm Totally Tweens: Comics & Cookies Tweens are invited to a monthly meet-up to read and discuss graphic novels. We'll be talking about old favorites, reading new titles, and doing activities around them. Plus, cookies will be served! For our September meeting, we'll discuss Out From Boneville by Jeff Smith, book one in the Bone series. This selection is intended to coincide with the Carol Spaziani Intellectual Freedom Festival, an annual library event that affirms everyone's right to freedom of thought and expression, and the American Library Association's annual Banned Books Week. The Bone series has faced challenges and bans at multiple schools and libraries throughout the country for reasons including "unsuited to age group," "promotion of smoking and drinking," and "violence and horror." The first book in Jeff Smith's New York Times bestselling, award-winning graphic novel series features an unlikely hero who must save an idyllic valley from the forces of evil. After being run out of Boneville, the three Bone cousins -- Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone -- are separated and lost in a vast, uncharted desert. One by one, they find their way into a deep, forested valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures. Eventually, the cousins are reunited at a farmstead run by tough Gran'ma Ben and her spirited granddaughter, Thorn. But little do the Bones know, there are dark forces conspiring against them and their adventures are only just beginning! Grab a copy at the library, read up, and then join us for an outdoor discussion, activities, and cookies on the Pedmall. No registration is required; this event is for 3rd-6th graders only. At this first meeting of the school year, we'll collaborate on a list of books tweens want to read this year going forward. Iowa City Public Library Iowa City Public Library America/Chicago public
