06/01/2022 6:00pm 06/01/2022 8:00pm An Evening Hike at Cangleska Wakan Park A hike at the Johnson County Conservation's Cangleska Wakan Park will kick off this summer’s Adult Summer Reading Program. Led by a Johnson County Conservation Naturalist, this evening hike will introduce us to the Cangleska Wakan, a 132 acre Johnson County Park adjacent to the Bur Oak Land Trust's Big Grove Preserve off Sugar Bottom Road. The Cangleska Wakan (Lakota Sioux for "Sacred Circle") is made of oak forest with several round barns on the property, including the Celebration Barn. The hike will be close to 2 miles and will take approximately 2 hours. The trail is bumpy, uneven, and contains some sloped terrain. There are a few water crossings, two over bridges and possibly one on rocks over very shallow water. Shoes that can get muddy are recommended and walking sticks/trekking poles are recommended for anyone needing assistance with balance. Bug spray, some drinking water and a hat are also suggested. The program is part of the 2022 Adult Summer Reading Program. Directions: The CW’s address is 4045 245th St NE, Solon. Take Prairie du Chien north to Newport Road. Turn right on to Newport Road and continue north to Sugar Bottom Road. Go left onto Sugar Bottom Road, and continue to 245th St NE. Turn left on to 245th. The CW has two parking areas – the first by the large round barn - and the 2nd which we will use further along 245th Street. Drive past the first entrance at the large round barn and go 0.3 miles to the second parking area on the right. Please park only in designated parking areas. The Congleska Wakan is 10 miles/22 minutes from downtown Iowa City. GPS of the parking area: 41.75113078944261, -91.53652184429423 Registration is required, as there is limited space for cars.
