The community is invited to join the Iowa City Public Library from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, as we say farewell to long-time Iowa City Police Department Downtown Liaison Officer David Schwindt. During this time, we’ll also welcome Officer Colin Fowler, who will step into the position.
Officer David Schwindt was hired by the Iowa City Police Department in January 2001. For his first 12 years he worked on patrol and as a Field Training Officer. In 2013 he was selected to be the first Downtown Liaison Officer.
Officer Schwindt has worked to implement a number of Community Policing strategies in downtown Iowa City, as well as eliminate the retail sales of synthetic drugs, and help establish the Winter Shelter and FUSE/Housing First projects. He will be transitioning to a new role with the city’s police department so he can continue the data-driven work that has helped show the need for additional positive services.
Officer Colin Fowler graduated from the University of Iowa and has been a police officer in Iowa City since 1999. He has worked patrol, including bicycle, since then, and has been assigned to the downtown district for several years. He has been on the department’s Special Response Team since 2001.
Officer Fowler is a Field Training officer and instructor for the department’s Crisis Intervention and ALICE programs. He looks forward to continuing the work done by Officer Schwindt in his new role.
The reception is open to the public; donuts and coffee will be provided.
