The Iowa City Public Library’s CoderDojo program is one of more than 30,000 Hour of Code events happening globally in celebration of Computer Education Week Dec. 9 through Dec. 15.
Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) is an annual program dedicated to showing kindergarten through 12th-grade students the importance of computer science education. An Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code" and show that anyone can learn the basics to be a maker, a creator, an innovator.
ICPL’s CoderDojo program regularly gives students in grades fifth through 12th the opportunity to learn how to write code. CoderDojo meets in the Library’s Computer Lab from 2 to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month. This month’s meeting will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14 -- the second-to-last day of Computer Science Education Week.
“It’s a great program because it not only introduces students to computer science, but it shows them that anyone – boy, girl, elementary or high school student – can learn to write code,” says Brian Visser, ICPL’s Teen Services Librarian.
CoderDojo is led by two University of Iowa technology employees: Dave Welch and Hans Hoerschelman. The pair have graciously donated their time and expertise to the program. In the past year, attendees have studies HTML basics and created a Website for the Secrest 1883 Octagonal Barn in West Liberty. Students recently started working with Arduino software.
“Students of all skill levels are welcome to attend anytime,” Visser says. “The program is set up so all levels of knowledge are met.”
