Artists--get your entries in for this year's Art Purchase Prize contest!

There's just a little over one week left to get your submissions in for this year's Art Purchase Prize contest! We're accepting entries through Sunday, October 4, and the first round of judging is on Tuesday, October 6.

Winning works of art are added to the Library's Art To Go collection, located on the first floor, on the wall separating the adult fiction collection and the Children's Room. Cardholders can check out two works at a time, for two months. The collection is made up of original art from the contest, along with reproductions of well-known works of art. So, if you've still got some bare apartment walls to decorate, or want to try out a new kind of art in your home, stop by the Library!

I work at the Info Desk on the second floor, and I select books for the adult nonfiction collection. I have a degree in anthropology, which really helps in selecting...well...almost anything. I also manage the Art To Go collection of framed prints and original art, and the nonfiction DVDs.

    This is a great book to get cozy with, taking place in none other than Agatha Christie's vacation home! That link sets the tone, a nice, clipped-accented British mystery set during the WWII bombings of London. Strong, winning heroines abound, with the well-meaning but troubled Bridey, the mysterious and sophisticated Gigi, and a host of others who serve as reminders of just how much women picked up the slack during the war, and various ways they also suffered. The relocation of children to the countryside--to protect them from the falling bombs--allows the book's characters to shelter in what should be a more idyllic location, but the sadness, death, and mystery follow them there, in more ways than one. Particularly poignant is the mother who keeps her child in London with her, with unforeseen consequences. -Candice
