Fredrik Backman Books

Swedish writer Fredrik Backman is my new favorite author. A friend recommended A Man Called Ove and I really enjoyed it. It was a feel-good heartwarming story that I couldn't put down.

Recently an ICPL Friends Foundation Board Member recommended another of Backman's books in a spread in an upcoming Library newsletter (you can see a preview here - look on page 6). The book, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry, is a heartwarming story about a seven year old girl who goes on a journey of discovery after the death of her beloved grandmother. I don't want to give too much away, but it's a compelling story that shows there are many good people in the world.

Britt-Marie Was Here is a follow-up book that features one of the characters from "My Grandmother ..." I'm about half way through the book and loving every word. Backman has a unique way of introducing plot and the result is books that are to be savored. Readers must be patient ... Backman will give you the details you need when he's ready.

Over the holiday week I found myself in a situation where I couldn't read at night with a light so the Library's eBook collection saved me when an Overdrive hold came in just when I needed it. (I am thankful for smart phones, WIFI and Overdrive!) The hold was for a Fredrik Backman novella, And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer, about the love between a grandfather with dementia and his grandson.

You can find all of Backman's books in our eBook Collection at this link - unfortunately most have a wait list because of their recent popularity. They are also available in our print collection at this link.

If you're looking for books that remind you there's a lot of good in our world, look for a Fredrik Backman book. And if you want to know more about this author, check out this article in the NY Times. Enjoy!
