Presented by Mary-Kayt Jones, a certified genetic counselor at the Univ. of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. 26 million and counting consumers have completed direct-to-consumer testing (DTC). Results from these tests can range from predicting your favorite ice cream flavor to informing you about important health information such if you are at an increased risk to develop certain cancers or Alzheimer’s disease. As more health information becomes available through DTC testing, how does one decipher what results may be of concern? Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals with specialized education in genetics and counseling to support individuals and families at risk for, or diagnosed with, a variety of inherited conditions. Throughout this presentation, we will discuss the role of a genetic counselor, the range of specialties UIHC genetic counselors work in and whether you should consider seeing a genetic counselor when it comes to DTC testing. The DNA Interest Group is designed to bring together individuals in the Iowa City area interested in learning about the use and interpretation of commercial DNA test results. Meetings will address a variety of different topical areas, including applications in genealogy, inferences of traits, exploration of human genetic variation, and the societal impact of these services.
