Library EventWorld Wednesday: Batik Art with the African American Museum of Iowa

On Wednesdays, School age children are invited to join us online for an activity that will help us learn and understand something new about different world cultures, all from local voices!

Batik is a method of dyeing cloth in which patterned areas are covered with wax so they will not receive the color. Batik textiles are found in many parts of Africa but the most developed skills are to be found in Nigeria where the Yoruba people use a method called adire eleko where starch paste is used to create the patterns. Today, we will create Batik art using a color resistance process with crayons and watercolors guided by a staff member from the African American Museum of Iowa.

This activity will include a craft that requires wax from a candle, a piece of fabric, and watercolor paints. If you would like to pick up supplies from the library for ELEMENTARY AGE kids in your household you can register to pick up or mail a kit beginning the Thursday before the event through the week of, or as supplies last.
