Press ReleaseSeptember is Library Card Sign-up Month

Add a library card to your back-to-school list

With school back in session, it’s time to make sure students have the most important school supply of all – a free library card.

Iowa City Public Library resources are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can use their card to: LIBRARYCARD_BELLE_web

  • Check out materials from the Library’s collection, including books, videos and music.
  • Access our collection of premium databases.
  • Explore the Library’s digital collection, including eBooks, eAudiobooks and eVideos as well as local music from our Local Music Project.
  • Get connected to the Library’s on-site public computer stations for Internet usage and access to some common software.

Library cards are great for non-students, too.

Who’s eligible?

Library cards are eligible to all Iowa City residents; persons owning property in Iowa City; and residents who live or own property in areas covered by contracts for library service (including unincorporated rural Johnson County and the cities of Hills and University Heights).

Cards also will be issued to persons living within the service area of an Iowa library approved for reciprocal borrowing through the Open Access Program. Check at the Help Desk or call 319.356.5200 for a full listing of participating libraries.

Persons without a permanent address in this service area and who will be here from one to six weeks are eligible for temporary cards. Temporary borrowers may have only two items checked out at a time.

Getting your card

Online
You can apply for a card online.

After completing the online application, stop by the Library within two weeks to pick up your card. Please be prepared to show identification and proof of your residence address (current driver license, lease or voter registration card; mail with a current post mark; preprinted checks from a bank).

In  person
Stop by the Cards Desk at the Library at 123 S. Linn Street in downtown Iowa City at any time to complete a paper application for a card. Library cards are issued immediately if you have photo identification and proof of current residential address at the time of application. A Post Office box is not sufficient address.

Persons eligible for temporary cards must provide their temporary local address and their permanent residence address.

Help with existing cards

If you reside in Coralville, North Liberty, or otherwise outside of the above listed communities, you can apply for a general use card that does not include premium online resources use.
