The Book End used book store inside the Iowa City Public Library will no longer accept VHS tapes for resale. The remaining stock at the store will be sold until it is gone.
“The Book End Committee of the Library Friends Foundation Board of Directors made this decision knowing that the library has not circulated the format for several years, and few customers purchase them these days,” says Patty McCarthy, the Library’s Development Director.
Proceeds from sales at The Book End bookstore directly benefit these Iowa City Public Library programs: Children's Summer Reading Program, Teen Summer Reading Program, and Art Purchase Prize, in addition to buying new materials for the Library collection.
Patrons wanting to rid their home of video tapes can recycle them through the City of Iowa City’s electronic waste recycling program. For a $2 per small box fee, tapes can be taken to the landfill, 3900 Hebl Ave. SW, or to ReStore, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, on the north side of the building.
The landfill is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. ReStore’s donation hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. No appointments are needed in either location.
Both The Salvation Army Family Store, 1725 Boyrum Street, and Goodwill Store, 985 Highway 6 East, will accept VHS tape donations. The videos must be pre-recorded; not blank VHS tapes that have been used to record television programs.
The Book End is located on the second floor of the Iowa City Public Library. Hours of operation are 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday; and 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Book End is closed on Sunday.
