What does it mean to be “human”? What does it mean to be “ordinary”? What does it mean to be a “family”? These deep philosophical questions (and more) are explored by the android Avenger in Marvel Comics’ Vision, v.1: Little Worse Than a Man. Former CIA agent and current comic book rising star Tom King wrote this future classic, with refreshingly understated and stunningly subdued artwork by Spanish illustrator Gabriel Hernandez Walta.
The Vision, still struggling to discover his humanity after his disastrous relationship with The Scarlet Witch, decides to go back to where he started—the laboratory. There, he builds himself a new family of androids, constructing a wife, Virginia, and twin teenagers, Vin & Viv. Together, they set out to live happy, normal lives in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. However, their lives become anything but “happy” and “normal” when the Grim Reaper pays them a visit. Things quickly spiral out of control from there. With humor, heart, and horror, this story is part superhero family adventure, part social commentary. The story concludes in the equally excellent Vision, v.2: Little Better Than a Beast.
