We want to card you!

2017-09-01-card-you September is National Library Card Sign-up Month - the 30th anniversary of National Library Card Sign-up Month. This sign-up drive has been held every September since 1987, at the beginning of the school year, to encourage everyone to sign-up for a Library Card. The month-long drive was started after former U.S. Secretary of Education, William Bennett, proclaimed, "Let's have a national campaign ... every child should obtain a library card and use it."

I appreciate the sentiment, and especially like the part about everyone using it. At Iowa City Public Library, a Library Card gets you more than access to checking out Library materials. A Library Card enables access to Library computers, online databases, eCollections, and much more. It's also your ticket for a free bus ride. Iowa City Public Library was recently featured in the American Libraries Magazine for our innovative partnership to provide bus rides to and from the Library on Iowa City Transit buses. The article by Jeffrey T. Davis, entitled Sharing Our cities, Towns and Natural Places-It starts with library cards, features our Ride and Read program that gives two free bus passes per week for a free ride home. What do you need in order to get two free bus passes? A Library Card!

During the month of September, sign-up for a Library Card. Fill out the online form, bring in a photo ID and proof of local address, and you'll be set. Lost your card? No. Problem. We'll provide a free replacement card all month. As an extra bonus, use your Library Card on the Bookmobile and you'll get an entry into a free drawing for a $25 gasoline gift card. If you get a Library Card on the Bookmobile AND check out materials, you'll be entered into the drawing twice!

We want to card you ... because when we card you at the Library, good things happen! Cheers to a great school year and cheers to everything you can do with a Library Card from Iowa City Public Library!
