Romance is wonderfully large and varied fiction genre that can be split into many subgenre such as Historical Romance, Contemporary Romance, Romantic Comedy, etc. Contemporary Romance is by far the largest subgenre. Contemporary romances, for the most part, take place in the same time period in which they are written. They often contain elements that date the story - computers, social media, or current events. The older a contemporary romance book gets, the more the story or the characters actions become unrelatable to readers. For example pre-1970’s romantic heroines rarely had careers, and often quit working when they married or had children. For many of today's romance readers this lifestyle can be hard to relate to. Because contemporary romances deal directly with modern problems, themes, and society, there is often a much higher degree of realism in the stories that won’t be as apparent in other subgenres. And while LGBTQ Romance has quickly become its own subgenre, it can also be included in the Contemporary Romance genre.
