This is an important year in Iowa City because it marks the 50th anniversary of celebrating LBGTQ+ Pride. In 1970 a group of LGBTQ University of Iowa students marched in the Homecoming Parade and that lay the ground for the movement that saw its biggest crowd in 2019.

The Iowa City Public Library is now offering curbside pickup and mail delivery of available library materials. Library cardholders interested in an item can place a hold in our catalog. Allow up to two business days for staff to pull the item from the shelf. Once the hold is ready, patrons will receive an email or phone notification asking for their delivery preference: curbside or mail. If curbside is chosen, the patron will be prompted to schedule an appointment for pickup.

Without the ability to browse the shelves at the library it is easy to feel adrift in finding your latest read. I also miss shelving holds at the Help Desk between helping people because that clues me into the hot items. While the Iowa City Public Library is closed in response to COVID-19, and our Bookmobile is social distancing under the College Street bridge, staff are still hard at work. From answering questions over the phone, email, and chat, endeavoring some cleaning projects back at the building, inventorying the collection...we're staying busy trying to reach our community in these swiftly changing times but also looking ahead to continue to bring Iowa City the best we have to offer.

If you have been on the 2nd floor of the library lately and been all the way back to the blue North wall, you may have had the opportunity to checkout one of the most unique displays to be hosted at the Iowa City Public Library. This display, or exhibition, is the work of MFA student in Book Arts at the University of Iowa India Johnson, and is Thread Library. This library within our library is a collection of threads, with an accompanying card catalog.

About Frannie

Frannie's picture

A reader for all seasons, Frannie is just as happy with a tattered copy of Pippi Longstocking as she is with latest volume of Brain K. Vaughan's Saga. Primarily interested in the visual language in prose and colorful plays on words, secondarily occupied with troubled souls and tales of redemption.
