Here's another book I came across while cataloging and just had to put on hold: Sad Animal Facts by Brooke Barker. Flatiron Books' promo line reads "A delightful and quirky compendium of the Animal Kingdom’s more unfortunate truths, with over 150 hand-drawn illustrations,"--and that's exactly what it is. Delightful illustrations with quirky facts about each animal.
Facts include the following:
- "The ringtail lemur that smells the worst is in charge of the entire group"
- "Pregnant polar bears gain 500 pounds"
- "If a wolf is kicked out of its pack, it never howls again."
Each fact is accompanied by a quip from the anthropomorphic cuties. And the appendix includes more facts with explanations, so you can find out things like why dik diks mark their territory with their tears.
Library lovers will enjoy the fact that Brooke Barker spent time as a reference librarian, and started illustrating these sad animal facts in her downtime on the desk.

Once I got into this audiobook, I had to make sure I only opened it when I had a solid block of time to binge-listen. The story, the narrative performances had me so rapt that any disruption to my attention to it stoked my ire. I missed the fact that it won an Audie; the award is well deserved. And honestly, I'm not a fan of the covers of Christina Lauren's books so I passed this one by every time I saw it. But boy was I missing out! The writing is so funny too, the plot clever. The first book in this series, The Soulmate Equation, is definitely going on my To Be Read list. Can't wait! -Melody
