Welcome to the Library!

Many of you have gotten new library cards while the building has been closed. Or you may have renewed your card after years of being away. What do we have for you these days?

Star Collections

The Iowa City Public Library has one of the best collections in all of Iowa. How do you get your hands on something new when the building is closed?

Reserve an Item

When you already know what you want, search for the item in our catalog. After finding it, click the “Place a hold” button.

Click on the place hold button

You’ll then enter your library card number and password. Type the card number in its entirety, with no spaces. The last step is to hit the “Submit” button. You’ll have the option of choosing the Bookmobile when it is in service.

Click the Submit button to finish placing hold

Wondering if your items are ready? Read up about how to check your hold status (note: currently no appointments are necessary for express pickup). When they are ready, head to the library’s Linn Street doors to pick up your items.

We also have other tools to help you explore more. Visit the New section to see the latest arrivals to the ICPL collection. There you can narrow in on which area of the collections that you are interested in—even the Children’s shelves!

Or follow what library staff love on our Staff Picks page. We share books, movies, and music we love. On our lists, we hand-pick titles to showcase timely topics.

Get personalized recommendations from librarians Want something more personalized? Try our Staff Picks…Just for You service. You’ll have the option of asking for a list of recommendations or a bundle of items that are available now. It’s a lot of fun for us to match you with recommendations we think you’ll love. Please give us a try!

Digital Collections

We have amazing collections you can use from the comfort of your own home. Find a vast selection of e-books and audiobooks on Libby. Swipe through award-winning films on Kanopy. Or relax with some magazines on RBdigital or Flipster.

We can even help you research from home! Consumer products, car repair, even stocks. Head to our Online Resources page to explore more. And we love research questions! Do reach out if you need expert backup for digging into your information needs.

Note: Digital Collections are available to cardholders who live in Iowa City, Hills, Lone Tree, University Heights, and rural Johnson County.

We miss working with kids and families so much that we’ve created a host of offerings just for them. We’ve got online events, bingo cards to work on throughout each month, and a plethora of Storytime videos for little ones to pass the time.
